Mother's Day

05/10/2009 - 00:00

Mother's Day is a day honoring mothers, celebrated on various days in many places around the world. Mothers often receive gifts on this day.

The modern Mother's Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis, as a day to honor mothers and motherhood; especially within the context of families, and family relationships. It is now celebrated on various days, in many parts of the world. Father's Day is a corresponding holiday honoring fathers.

The practice of celebrating a Mother's Day to honor your own mother is a relatively recent tradition, first established in the U.S.A. in the early 20th century. It is distinct from other pagan and Christian traditions honoring motherhood, or from the U.K. holiday, Mothering Sunday, which is also known as Mother's Day and dates back to the 16th century.

Many countries around the world now celebrate a "Mother's Day", generally this is a recent practice, derived from the U.S. tradition. Exceptions include, for example, the Mothering Sunday in the UK, which predates the U.S. holiday.

It is considered by many as a "Hallmark Holiday", i.e. one with a purely commercial background.

I notice there is less info about Mother's Day than Father's Day!!!??? (yes only two sentences less but still... 50% less!!)... why... everyone knows mothers are the ones who raise the children!!... hey, I respect fathers!!... my husband is a great father!... however, I just don't think the "description" honors mothers on this site as much as fathers!!!!.....
