Cinco de Mayo ("The Fifth of May" in Spanish) is a national holiday in Mexico which is also widely celebrated in the United States. It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on 05 May 1862.

Cinco de Mayo is not an officially recognized holiday in the United States other than by people indigenous to the holiday’s country of origin. Any recognition or celebration is and always has been a novelty and or a courtesy.
This is no different than St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, Valentines Day, or Easter.
